Name and Any "Nicknames"
James Garrett Bonifacio Jr. In high school friends call me Himes which was short for Jaime which is what Coach Gladys currently calls me.
WHAT GOT YOU INTO CROSSFIT?
I was working out at a local gym here in the Poconos and a guy named Chris noticed how I was squatting (ass to grass) and that I was wearing Vibrant Five Finger shoes. He was teaching a functional fitness classes at the time and asked me to join his class. My wife Zinnia actually took the class before me and said it was right up my alley as I was getting bored of the old back and bi's and chest and tri's workouts I was currently doing. After taking that first class I was hooked!
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START COACHING?
My first coaches GM, Josh, Dusty and Chris were my inspiration to start coaching. I love how they helped me to become a better version of myself. I wanted to be able to do the same with others. I love seeing the changes and transformations our members go through.
WHAT COACHING CERTIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?
I currently have my CF-L1 and plan on getting my CF-L2 before the end of this year. I'd also love to attend CrossFit's gymnastics, weightlifting, kids and adaptive training specialty courses. I also have my National D license to coach soccer. I also have a license to ill. Get it? License to ill! Hahahahahaha!
WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
Well, I enjoy long walks on the beach... Hahaha! Seriously, I love mountain biking and snowboarding. I also dabble in creating things using pallet wood and refurbishing/upcycling older pieces of furniture. And just between you and me... I love reading Nicholas Sparks novels and watch romantic movies on the Hallmark Channel.
IF YOU COULD PUT A MESSAGE ON A BILLBOARD WHAT WOULD IT SAY?
Be present. And by this I mean enjoy today because we aren't promised tomorrow. Don't waste time and energy thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Hug your kids, family, loved ones and friends. When the time comes and I know it will, I want to look back on a life filled with memories rather than regrets.
WHAT IS ONE LESSON YOU WISHED YOU LEARNED EARLIER IN LIFE?
Slow is steady and steady is fast. There is no magic pills, only hard work. You've got to be willing to put in the work to get the results you want.
WHAT FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
I wish I could put something cool here like muscle ups or a 250lb snatch or qualifying for Regionals but alas, I can't. Those will come in due time. I am proud of being able to use the fitness I do have to good use in my everyday life. Bringing all the groceries in the house in one trip? Nailed it! Or how about being the guy at work who is always asked to carry the heavy boxes to and from the basement? That's me!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CURRENT GOALS?
Current goals? Win an Oscar? Nah. I do have a couple of them.
1. Being consistent with getting to the gym. I can't say I don't have time because i do. I have a nice little window in the morning before work where I can join the Breakfast Club and get my workout in.
2. Get down to about 200lbs. This is a long term goal because I know it won't happen instantly and will require hard work and discipline to get there. And I will get there!
NAME ONE OF YOUR HIDDEN TALENTS
I used to do Filipino folk dancing. I can also tie a cherry stem into a knot in my mouth. Lol!
NAME ONE TALENT YOU WISH YOU HAD
I wish I could do the Dougie! But really, I wish I could do those awesome hand lettered designs you see nowadays. Stuff like calligraphy, brush lettering, etc.
FAVORITE CHEAT MEAL
Pizza and french fries. And authentic Cantonese chow mein (with the crunchy noodles). And almond chicken soo guy but I've only ever seen that back home in Ottawa. Wait, was I supposed to pick just ONE?
FAVORITE CROSSFIT LIFT
Snatches. But I like cleans as well. I guess I like thrusters too cuz they are a nice whole body movement. Can I say all of them?
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT STROUD CROSSFIT?
Definitely the community! I've been here since Stroud opened and although it's been through a few changes, the community is still freaking awesome! I love every one of our members! Sure, our owners and coaches are great but without our kick ass members, we'd be just another gym.
ANY OTHER FUN FACTS ABOUT YOURSELF?
I've got five awesome boys who all take after their awesome mom whom we all miss like crazy! I grow a beard because not many Filipinos can. We have a miniature Yorkie named Moose. I was born in San Francisco, moved to Canada when I was two and moved back stateside in 2001, eh!
